Wounded Confederates taken prisoner
Records indicate that only a few wounded Confederates were taken prisoner by the Yankees, sent to Van Buren General Hospital at Milliken’s Bend on June 7.
These four men have been identified:
Thomas Chandoin (Chandon) (Chadin), Co. D, 17th Texas Infantry – wounded in leg
Chandoin was age 27 at enlistment in 1862. The company muster roll compiled in August 1863 listed him as missing in action. He was sent to another hospital (unidentified) around June 10 or 20. What became of him after that time is unknown.
Reuben H. White, Co. D, 19th Texas Infantry – wounded in ankle
As of June 23 he was still at Van Buren hospital; on July 23 he died.
William Mathews, Co. K, 19th Texas Infantry – knee and shoulder
His service record has not been found. There is a William Mathews who is a member of Co. A, but he was away in Texas at the time of Milliken’s Bend, serving as an overseer on behalf of his mother.
C.C. Malone (McLowin) (McLown), Co. E (Co. A), 19th Texas Infantry – ankle
Malone was 18 years old when he enlisted in March 1862. Company records show him still missing in action as of the end of June. He, too, appears to have been a member of Co. A – not Co. E as Federal records have it. Immediately after the battle General Henry McCulloch’s report listed him as killed. As of July 8, he was still at Van Buren Hospital. On Aug. 11 he was sent to a general hospital elsewhere, arriving at St. Louis General Hospital on Aug. 18 The medical complaint was “vulnus sclopet” or gunshot wound. He died on Nov. 2, 1863. Buried at Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery. Image and more at findagrave.com.
Curious that both of the men who are known to have died (and both buried in National Cemeteries, no less), suffered from ankle wounds. I wonder what was so particularly fatal about those types of injuries? I suppose, perhaps, more susceptible to infection or gangrene?
