Milliken’s Bend in the Confederate Press
Natchez Daily Courier, June 16, 1863:
Washington [Ark.] Telegraph, June 24, 1863:
A fight occurred at Miliken’s [sic] Bend on Sunday, the 7th inst. between our forces and that of the enemy, which resulted in their entire defeat. The battle was a severe one, our loss being 40 killed and about 100 wounded. Theirs, 1000 killed and double that number wounded. A negro regiment, organized by Gen. Thomas, the Adjutant General of the United States, was engaged in the fight, and it is said fought better and longer than the Yankees. We took 72 of the negroes prisoners, with their Colonel and Lieut.-Colonel, Yankees, who arrived here on Thursday last. The officers were so thoroughly ashamed of their position that they never held up their heads while here. The enemy were driven to their gunboats, and we are in possession of Miliken’s Bend. – Monroe [La.] Register
