The article provides a brief but solid overview of the battle and its significance. It contains links to other related articles at 64 Parishes, and has several illustrations to accompany it, along with a bibliography containing both primary and secondary published sources. Teachers – this can serve as a great introduction to the story of Louisiana Black troops and the story of emancipation during the Civil War.

64 Parishes combines both an online magazine format along with an extensive historical and cultural encyclopedia “to celebrate, document, and champion the peoples of our complicated, storied state through the publication of engaging and reliable content from across Louisiana’s sixty-four parishes.” It is a project of the Louisiana Endowment for the Humanities.
