This page is for descendants of men who served in Parsons’s Texas Cavalry Brigade, under the command of Col. William Henry Parsons. In late June, the brigade saw action at Mound Plantation and made a raid on Lake Providence. During this time, the brigade consisted of the 12th Texas Cavalry, the 19th Texas Cavalry, and a small detachment from Pratt’s Battery. Most of the rest of Parsons’s men, including members of 21st Texas Cavalry, remained in Arkansas under the command of Col. George Washington Carter, and were not involved in the operations near Milliken’s Bend, Louisiana.
My great grandfather served with parsons 12th Brigade. His name was T.H. Smith (Thomas Harrison Smith)
Thanks for stopping by, Jackie.
Are there any existing photos of men that served with Parson’s ?
My GG Grandfather was W W McIver .
Looking for info , thanks !
Marisa – Apologies for the delay in responding. Off the top of my head, I’m not certain that any of the books about Parson’s brigade include photographs. But they can certainly make for interesting reading. Perhaps you’ve already discovered them, both by Anne Bailey. Between the Enemy and Texas https://amzn.to/2NVFWfI and In the Saddle with the Texans https://amzn.to/2v0Jc2f . Another good book full of pictures – but I don’t know if there are any of Parsons’ men, is Portraits of Conflict….(Texas) https://amzn.to/2AmwtvO . Best of luck!
W. W. McIver was also the Great Grandfather to Larry McMurtry , writer of Lonesome Dove (and GGF of my wife, as well). We are curious but have not tried to contact.
I believe one of my ancestors served in the Parson’s brigade. His name was John Wesley Welch
Thank you for stopping by, Margot. If you have information about your ancestor’s involvement in events near Lake Providence, Richmond (LA) and Milliken’s Bend vicinity in 1863, please feel free to share. If you are not already familiar with the works by Anne Bailey about Parson’s Brigade, be sure to check them out!
