This page is for descendants of men who fought at Milliken’s Bend in the 16th Texas Cavalry (Dismounted). They were part of General Henry McCulloch’s Brigade, part of Walker’s Texas Division. Please note that there is a separate page for descendants of the 16th Texas Infantry – which is an entirely different regiment.
My 3x great uncle Thomas Jefferson Reagan (my maternal side) fought and died at Milliken’s Bend. From Collin county)Also, I have a 3x great grandfather, from my paternal side, who fought at milliken’s bend, Randolph Clark. A founding father of TCU. As I have told my cousin Isaiah Tadlock, it seems likely that my grandfather Clark could have dug the grave for my uncle TJ Reagan-never knowing that one day their families would be one. Would love to know of any information you have on confederate cemeteries in that area where my uncle could be buried.
Bought your book—can’t WAIT to read it!
Thanks, Ashley, and thanks for posting this information. I know I have been asked before about Confederate burials, and I thought I had posted information on this site, but I can’t seem to find it now. Perhaps I was responding on another site, elsewhere. I believe, if I remember from my previous, that some burials were made in nearby Tallulah. I think all I did was to explore http://www.findagrave.com and run a search on Madison Parish and also perhaps East Carroll Parish and poked around til I found something that looked like it could be a possibility. There is a “Milliken’s Bend” cemetery listed on findagrave – but it does not provide any details at all about its location, and I wonder if this might be a listing for a “virtual” cemetery, rather than an actual physical graveyard.
Thank you for your interest!
Please forgive my error. It was not my 3x great grandfather in the battle- rather, his brother Addison Clark.
Ashley, please let me know what you find about the 16th Texas burials for Miliken’s Bend. I’m looking for Sgt James /Tobie Gardenhire who was part of the Collins Co /Kaufman Co Gardenhires that all enlisted same day.
Thanks
Mike, I am working on a book on the 16th Texas Cavalry, and have some information on the Gardenhires. You can contact me at sixteenthtexascavalry@yahoo.com, or via my facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/16thTexasCavalryDismtd.
I’m the descendant of Pvt. Isam Boren, 16th Texas Cavalry, Company I of Fitzhugh’s Regiment, the “Brush Battalion”. He was my 3rd Great uncle. He was killed at the Battle of Milliken’s Bend in E. Carroll Parish LA. He is buried somewhere on the battlefield. To see the online memorial at Findagrave.com, go to https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/156890525/isham-boren
Thank you, Robby, and thanks for sharing the information on findagrave.
Isham Boren mentioned above was in the 16th Texas Cavalry, Company I of Fitzhugh’s Regiment, the “Brush Battalion. He was my great-uncle. My great-grandfather Alexander B. Boren also fought in the battle. There are several references that Isham was buried at Milliken’s Bend. I would very much like to find his grave or any kind of marker that might indicate where he is buried.
Thank you, Ann. Unfortunately, the location of Confederate burials remains a mystery. You can learn more about possible burial sites in this post: https://www.millikensbend.com/confederate-burials/
